The Elder Scrolls Online

This is my most recent MMORPG that I have deiced to dedicate my precious hours to playing. I would have started playing it sooner, however I  was not a fan of their subscription scheme and so decided to hold off until they made it a one off payment to play. Boy, I’m glad I did. Let me explain.

The game play is just so repetitive. Every time you enter a new part of the map you do the same thing, hunt around for quests, complete the quests, level up and move on. They try to make it more engaging by creating main quests, side quests and mini quests as well as sticking some dungeons, bosses and ‘random’ events in there. However, the story lines for these quests, even the smaller ones are just so epic that I find myself getting disinterested and skipping through to get to the action. The ‘random’ events aren’t all that exciting either, you do the same thing every time one spawns, fight the bad guys and destroy some orbs to unlock the bigger bad guys, who, once you defeat them leave a chest with mediocre items within. And the scenery get’s a bit repetitive also particularly the interiors of houses and the underground levels like caves and crypts. I guess this is a cheeky wink at Skyrim, or perhaps other ES games were like this too, either way I find my self getting lost and confused frequently due to this fact. Luckily when you are above ground you know where you are, the terrains are all unique which enable you to become familiar with and easily navigate your way around.

What maddens me, the completionist that I am, is that there is WAY too much to do! There are so many quests to finish, so many caves and crypts to explore, so many bosses to defeat. The map is literally saturated with experience points, by the time you’re halfway through the map you’ve out leveled the area. I haven’t noticed enemies increasing in difficulty as you level as I seem to be able to smash them pretty easily and trust me when I say this, I am not in any way a skilled player.

Also, for a MMORPG there’s not a lot for you to do as big groups. I tend to stay away from PvP and WvW parts of the game, so maybe it’s there, but it’s certainly lacking in main game play. You aren’t so much as working with your group as you are individuals playing on the same server and saying “hi” to one another as you each complete which ever quest you happen to be on. Its great that you can share a quest with group members, but that’s as far as you go. There’s no pooling of progress for that quest. For example, If you have to collect 10 items each member of the group has to collect 10 items individually. This is madness! What’s the point in having a group if you can’t work together to complete quests? It gets a bit lonely out there. The only time team effort is involved in when playing an instance, or perhaps in WvW but I’m not sure if ESO has that?

One more thing! this game is glitchy, for a game to be out this long and still just randomly quit on me while I am in the middle of a very long quest is highly annoying. On several occasions I have not been able to progress in a quest because something has not loaded properly, forcing me to quit the quest and come back to it. Sometimes I’m lucky and ill be able to start where I left off. Other times… they make me want to cry cause I have to do it all over again!

In saying all this I do enjoy how simple it is to play, I am a big fan of only using keys 1-5 for fighting, WASD for moving and mouse for directing. It’s great that you can also use first person from time to time. The fact that is just so jam packed with quests is also good because It means that I will become alpha and be able to DOMINATE the main quest when I get round to it.
